The prevailing view of China is that the country is an economic juggernaut sure to become the dominant power of the twenty-first century. In this provocative and stimulating book critically acclaimed author Will Hutton warns instead that China is running up against a set of daunting challenges from within its own political and economic system that could well derail its rise, leading to a massive shock to the global economy. The United States, he argues, must recognize that it is has a vital stake in working to assure this doesn’t happen, for if China’s political liberalization and economic growth collapse, the United States will suffer crippling consequences.

Anywho, if you were on campus this past Thursday, May 8th, you might have noticed a ceremony taking place at around 3pm. That ceremony was to celebrate the construction of the new Humanities building going up in the old science/math (MESH) building’s place. Free juice/coffee/tea and cookies were available and local government officials came by to celebrate the occasion. This is an important event because now it means that students can stop by one location to get registered, advised, and pay for classes! No more running between the CSC (College Services Center) and SEAC (Student Entry and Advising Center)! Well, once the building is built.

With that said, please do not forget that May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month as well as Jewish American Heritage Month. Celebrate by checking out a book on either one of these subjects as learning about the different cultures that make up this country is always a fantastic opportunity to learn something new.

That about does it for us. Keep up the hard work, June is nearly here!

Your library faculty and staff are hoping that this blog post finds you well into your Spring 2008 Quarter workload. Be it grading, researching, or studying for an exam; we’re here for you!

With that said, if you didn’t come in and view the photography display in the library, you missed out big time! We had photos of all sorts of things, from Obama’s rally in Seattle a few months back, to time pieces, and just about everything inbetween. We truly have a talented community of students at Olympic College!

Also, if you didn’t know, April is National Poetry Month. Even the Seattle Times has a piece on the phenomenon! As usual, you can swing by the 2nd floor of the library to check out our book display for some great poetry to read on a cold and rainy day like today. The Library of Congress also has a great subject directory of poets to browse through and find poetry as well as biographies on the poets themselves! From Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “We Wear the Mask” to the ninth librarian of the Library of Congress, Archibald MacLeish, they offer a great resource for learning more about some fantastic poets.

Next month, we’ll celebrate Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. Then, before you know it, the spring quarter will be over!

Don’t hesitate to swing by the library for assistance with your research needs this quarter! We’re here to help! Have a great quarter!!!

Yes, another quarter at Olympic College is nearly done and over with.

In order to help with some of the stress that students, faculty, and staff are working through at this point in the quarter, why not take a moment to come check out the photography display in the library? Yes folks, it’s that time of year again! (all photos enlarge if you click on them)

We have photos of all types of things on display of the second floor of the library. Never fear if you missed the big premier event on March 5th, the photos will reside in the library until April 16th, so please take some time to enjoy the artistic display!

Take this people’s choice winner as an example. Interesting use of the element of time, don’t ya think?

With the month of March comes the celebration of women in American history. If you happen to be looking for a research topic for an essay or report, the subject of women’s history is a great one to consider. Check out our book display, on the second floor of the library, for plenty of great reads and research tools!

We’d also like to take this time to announce that the library will be closed during the week of spring break. That means we’ll be closed from March 21st at 5pm until we open up for business at the beginning of spring quarter on March 31st at 7:30am. Be sure to check out Kitsap Regional Libraries‘ many locations if you’re looking for a quiet library to hang out in during break! From Bainbridge Island to Manchester; they have Kitsap County well covered!

Well, that’s about it from us. Good luck with finals and we’ll see you at the beginning of the Spring 2008 Quarter!

Always here to help,

Your Olympic College Library System!

Hello Students, Faculty, and Staff!

We are pleased to greet you with another blog entry for the Winter 2008 Quarter. Our apologies for such a lag inbetween this entry and the last/first one of the quarter, but you know how life goes!

In any event, if you don’t know already; February is Black History Month! If you haven’t already, please take a moment or two to peruse the wonderful assortment of books that we have displayed on the 2nd floor of the library, near the elevator. From W.E.B. DuBois, to the Williams sisters, we have texts on a little bit of everybody! Whether it’s for a research project or your own personal enjoyment, be sure to check out the book display every month when you visit us for new and interesting books!

Speaking of the 2nd floor, be prepared for yet another visual piece of eye candy as we begin to set up photos for the yearly photography exhibit in the library. This year, the exhibit will run from March 3rd to April 18th, so get your checkbooks out and get ready to make an offer if you see a photograph that you like! Like we’ve mentioned in previous entries, every year, the winning photograph is donated to the library for display purposes. Look around you, we have them displayed all over the library (mainly downstairs near the computers)!

Before we go; don’t forget to check out our new books displays! We’re continually inputting more and more books into our system so that you can enjoy them and check them out. So, please do!

That about does it for us. We know it’s getting to that point in the quarter where it’s truly “crunchtime” research wise for our students. Our words of advice; get to the library as soon as you can to begin your research. Don’t wait until the day before an assignment is due to start. As soon as you have the basic information available on your assignment, get started so you can iron out the kinks way before they become a major problem/stressor. We’re here to help, so let us do our job by assisting you with finding credible resources!

Good luck with the remainder of your quarter and don’t be afraid to see us at the Information Desk!

Hello Students and Staff!

How was your break? We all hope it was restful and full of good fun and cheer.

As you noticed, on Tuesday, January 7th (yesterday), the campus closed due to inclement weather. Before writing this post, we noticed quite a few people turned to our blog for information and we’re excited about that. For the most up-t0-date information, you can do a number of things for current/official information on school closures or delays:

* Check your campus email (an ALL Staff & Students email was sent out at 5:44am alerting everyone of the closures on all three campuses.

* Check the Olympic College splash page. Information about the closures was posted there (at the bottom of the screen) as well.

* Register for cell phone/telephone/email notices of campus closures at the School Report website. At 6:10am, emails were sent out to registered users of the service about O.C.’s closures.

* Check local news on TV or online for up-to-date closure information. News stations like King 5, Komo 4, etc., will have tickers scrolling across the bottom of the TV screen with school closure/delay information and a link for the same information on their websites.

We’ll be back with much more information as we get into the quarter, but we just wanted to take a moment to say, “Welcome back!” Don’t forget to think of us as you begin to work on research for your classes; we’re here to help!

We are O.C. ! ! !

Best Wishes for a Grand Winter 2008 Quarter,

Your Olympic College Library Faculty & Staff
